[shadow=teal,left,300]We work to live, not live to work.[/shadow]
All alone. It was just the way Phantom preferred it. She rather liked being by herself- she could thik about anything, do anything, say anything as long as she were careful who watched or heard. Always afraid of how others judged her behavior, Phantom never really liked being in a pack. She was her own dog and that was just the way she liked it.
The moon shone overhead, glistening on the glassy surface of the water before her. Her eyes sparkled and for once, she seemed at peace. She was always running around, doing one thing or another. It was her way of keeping busy. she almost enjoyed doing work- almost.
Thoughts ran through her head of why she is how she is, what made her be that way, what it would be like if she were a different breed of dog. She always thought deeply about such trivial things when given the chance. The questions just seemed to flutter about in her mind and never leave her alone until she came up with a suitable answer. Ofen she just did physical labor to get her mind off of the unimportant matters she often questioned about.
Some clouds moved in front of the moon and yet, the reflection on the lake grew no more misty than it had already been. She often wondered why this was so, how it was possible, and what made it happen that way. she might never know, so why bother trying to answer it?
She pawed a the ground out of boredom, simply trying to think of something to do. She had done all of the work she could think of and she was not in the modd to go hunting. she wanted to stay here and do something. looking at a reflection of herself in the water, she began to splash at it, watching the rippling waves move outward. A soft breeze came and blew, cuasing the ripples to grow ever so slightly larger. A fish came and jumped out of the water, right in front of Phantom's face. Astonished at the sudden movement, Phantom drew her breath in for a moment and let it out again seeing who the possible 'attacker' could be.
"It was a mere pond fish, that is all," She spoke to herself.

Massive paws moved onward, enjoying the feel of something besides cold ice beneath them. Yes, the ground was cold, especially during the dark of night, but it was comforting in some way to walk upon new terrain. Golden eyes pierced the darkness, glancing around attentively. Always alert was this tall handsome fellow called Shurikan. He slowed a bit, coming to the edge of a body of water, known by him to be Moon's Heart Lake. He gazed wondering and absent-mindedly upon the reflection of the moon, awestruck by its brilliance. He face grew solemn, for its golden color reminded him of his beloved sister...Ceres. He had not seen of heard word of her in a long while. He feared for her, but not wanting to think on it, he forced these thoughts from his mind. He reluctantly turned his head away form the lake and trotted onward along the bank.
He soon slowed his pace, catching the sound and smell of another. Someone else was wandering so late outside of pack territories? This confused him. He huffed and quickened his pace until coming upon the stranger. A dog she seemed to be and a unique one. He smiled slightly at her little encounter with the fish. He kept himself form chuckling. he decided not to speak of it, so not to embarass her. She had a coat of ebony and gold, and long velvet-looking fur. She looked to be the friendly sort at first glance, but one could never be too sure. He attempted to gain her attention by stepping lightly on a fallen leaf, and then he bowed to her respectfully. "My lady, I hope I have not intruded. My name is Shurikan. I hope I have not startled you, but, my lady, I fear that if I would have passed by you without a word you might have found me unmannered or unkind. Might I inquire of your name?" he asked extravagantly, addressing her politely, being one to never forget his manners. He looked into her eyes for a time then turned them away casually. It was impolite to never make eye contact, but equally so to stare. He'd mastered and equal balance years ago.
He wondered what he thought of her, and hoped he didn’t frighten her, being a lone and quite a large male approaching a lone and small fem at night. Being as logical as he was he found it surprising that he hadn’t already considered this. Still, if she wished him to go, he would leave at the immediate hint of her discomfort. He took a few steps away form her to give her room. He was glad to have the company, as isolated as he usually was. Even he needed to speak to someone every once in a great while. The large male then flashed her a friendly smile, hoping to inform her that he meant her no harm, quite the opposite. He worried for her being all alone here at night. Slowly his instinct to protect kicked in. he glanced around to make sure there were no threats to her before glancing back to her and awaiting her words. The pale moonlight shone down upon them, the ripples on the lake fading away. a cold breeze came from off the lake and ruffled his fur. Ah, it was a peaceful night.

OOC: Yay! someone replied! "Ah, if you wish," she said, bowing her head slightly and getting up from her haunches. "I am Phantom. Shurikan, do not worry, for you have interrupted nothing but my incident with a mere fish." She smiled at this new dog. He was large- at least to her he was large. She was not the biggest of dogs, so this feeling was normal to her. "In fact, you seem the opposite of unmannered or kind. I admire that." She was not in the mood for fighting- luckily the other animal didn't seem in the mood either. She had not at all been intimidated when the large male came toward her- she'd seen worse before. He looked like a gentle being, so she figured he might be worth talking to. She was not much of a socialite. In fact, she rarely ever talked with others. She just saw conversing with others without a reason trivial and a waste of breath- but this dog was kind enough to her so she might as well return the favor. "You may be wondering why they call me Phantom. Well," she paused, "when I walk or run- or do anything, I do it with barely making a noise. I do not even try to. It just... happens." Pawing the ground, she gave an example. she got up to give another example and started to run in circles. "See? No sound." Her playful mood kicked in- something that rarely ever happened. Most of the time she was just inquisitive and deep in thought. Her tail had the urge to wag for a little bit and she almost let it.

The massive dog towered over her, this they both could see. He was taller than most wolves, so he was much taller than this little fem. Still, he looked down to her and listened intently. He cracked a small smile at her words. They were poetic and well thought out, just as he spoke. He liked the way she conversed with him. An intelligent conversation was always a good one. He was glad to hear her name, and to know that he hadn’t intruded. He looked into her eyes once more, getting ready to speak, but found that it wasn't time. After thinking thoughts much like his own, that meaningless conversation was waste of precious moments, she began once more to speak. He sat then and listened, not daring to be rude and interrupt her. He had quite the reputation of a gentleman, and he held it close to him. He enjoyed the respect of others and respecting them in return.
The fem spoke of her name, Phantom. An intriguing name he must say. He pondered over it a brief moment before watching her stand. She flitted around in elegant circles, well, elegant by his standards, any extraordinarily; no footfall could be heard of any significance. He smiled at this. What a skill this lithe fem held. He paused to wonder and admire it a moment, always being able to truly admire the skills and virtues of others. He glanced at her with an approving smile. He then nodded to her. "Well my Lady Phantom, I must say I am quite flattered. I find you to also be a lady of grand virtue and kindness, if I may assume so quickly. May I add that your name is lovely and your skill amazes me." he said, then chuckled slightly. "Compared to you I am quite clumsy. For miles you would hear my footfalls. I suppose that is why fate dealt me my size. I needed something." he said, and he turned casually so that he could see her better through his good eye, though none could really tell of his poor sight. His words were true and pure. He truly did admire her. He looked down, but he felt quite content. It had been quite some time since he'd spoken to anyone, and he would say that this was one of the more enjoyable conversations he'd had.
He once again turned his large head over his strong shoulders. He scanned the clear midnight horizon for any signs of danger to her. He guessed that she was strong and wise, completely capable of protecting herself, but still he would prefer to stay with her until morning. It would be unthinkable to leave such a small and lovely fem to spend the night alone. He shivered at the thought, which he thought dreadful. With this thought came the realization of the lake’s location. It was toward the south. It was below the pack of midnight essence, and very close, too close, to the pack of Blood Abyss. He’d heard of the monster who claimed that terra. Ardent was his name. Yes, he would stay to see her safely through the night, and in the morning he would advise her to keep up her guard and perhaps seek land closer to Midnight Essence or Silent Reverie. He turned back to her and a smile passed his lips as he saw her tail swish back and forth. His accompanied her’s for a moment before his smile faded to a severe look. “Phantom, this is dangerous land. I beg of you permission to stay with you until dawn. If you wish me to leave, I will go, but I wish to see that this night is safe for you.” He said in a concerned tone.

She laughed a bit at the dog critiquing himself. "Why, thank you, Shurikan," She said. She listened as he continued on. Looking at his pelt, she found it glistened in the moonlight reflecting off of the pond. She stared in admiration and awe at this beautifle dog before her. Phantom felt as if she knew that this dog would protect hr no matter the situation. She felt warm and fuzzy inside when she thought if this. Not a word with others for many a moon can make one feel this way, for sure. She hadn't very many friends, and most of them either dissapeared or betrayed her. She listened to his plead near the end of his talking. Thinking for a moment, she replied. "If you would wish. I have no problem with you watching out for me on this night. For you are right, this spot is dreadfully close to wrong hands." She paused for a moment, "Thank you. I am very glad you had talked to me. I haven't talked to another in many many moons..." An awkward silence passed the dog.

Shurikan walked a few steps around, and sat next to a tree. He liked to have something next to him, so he could focus on his company indtead of his back. He smiled at her welcomed laugh. "You are very welcome." he said sincerely, bobbing his head again in a simple gesture. He looked to her and saw her go softer. Maybe not only with his eyes did he see this change, for thoughts paralel yet similar were crossing hjis own mind. Perhaps he saw this change in her with his own heart. He was thinking about her, how fragile and treasured a life was. Especially that of a vixen. They were so gentle, so kind and spirited, goddesslike in comparison with his bulky and selfish gender. He smiled to think of what a gift the heavens had blessed the pitiful dogs with. yes, he would go to the ends of the earth to see her safely through this night, and somehow he could sense her gratitude. Soon, he heard her reply. "I thank you, Phantom. I don't know how easy it would have been to have left you here. i'm relieved that you've allowed me to stay." he said with a small smile, then went about responding to her last statement. "Ah....my lady, you are more welcome than I can say. Thank you also, for I hate to admit it but I've grown lonely, and your presence is definately most welcomed. I am glad that we could be a relief for one another." he said gently.

OOC; Sorry if this post sucks. I have to get used to this character.
Swish, Swish
The frantic flapping of the fish was loud but silenced by a quick grab. The wolf-dog had the fish in his muzzle, squeezing the life out of the helpless creature. It stopped moving, it's body shining in the bright moon light. Parting his jaws a bit, he set the fish down gently. A breeze rippled the water, the fish swimming inside shimmering like neon. He wasn't paying attention to those. His attention had been snagged by the scent that the breeze brought along with it. He smelled a female, a single mammal. What was she doing out all by her lonesome? He snorted quietly, wondering how long the lingering scent would last. As though the female was right in front of him, he looked up at the scent of a male.
"Well, time for a party I suppose." He murmured gruffly. He wasn't in too good a mood, and it was obvious by his posture. He had his shoulders risen in a suddenly defensive matter. His tail was stiff behind him, and his muzzle was toward the sky. He kept the scents, and began to pad along. His body moved smoothly in the night, and luckily he had a clear path. He walked straight in the direction of the canines. He was already making assumptions about them before he saw them. They were probably pack wolves, the little buggers. Packs didn't interest him at the moment. He stumbled on his straight path, an obvious sign that he had lost focus.
He looked up into the moonlit path and kept walking. His paws were small for his height, so he was very agile. He crept for about a mile, and the scent got stronger. He saw no one, but heard voices. He was correct; male and female. 'Darn these far away mongrels,' He called canines mongrels freely, seeing that he was one. He didn't care about much. He walked farther, half a mile, and saw them. Standing behind a thin tree he could see the female, but the male was sitting beside a tree. The sable clover on his muzzle stuck out as he sniffed them from where he was. He wasn't nervous, or afraid. He revealed himself, standing next to the one he assumed was the female like he'd been there the whole time.
He looked them both up and down. "Hello. The name is Luke. Luke Marius, or Mari if you please. Would you care to tell me your names?" He said nonchalantly. Truly he didn't care if they gave their names or not. The only time he would see them again would probably in the their death beds, or so he hoped. He was mean, he was just a rebel.

"Well, I suppose I have attracted an audience with my being here." She laughed still being in her happy mood. "I assume that my record of not talking to other dogs has ended tonight." She looked at Shurikan and smiled. For some reason unknown to her, she wanted to be with Shurikan forever. She glanced back in this new dog's direction. Who could he be? Was he good? Was he cruel? She had no idea. Being wary, she told the new dog her name. "You may call me Phantom, stranger. Now it is my turn to ask something of you. For what is your name?" She asked inquisitively.
She looked up at the stars in the sky while she was waiting for an answer from this new dog. The moon and stars always seemed to be watching her- guiding her and making sure she was safe. For this she ws grateful. Being alone could be dangerous sometimes, but being with others could be equally dangerous. There was no end to the dangers in this world, you just have to live with them or face them in fear.

Shurikan looked to Phantom. He was about to speak to her, when footfalls broke his concentration. She hadn't yet responded to him, and now she wouldn't have the chance. This didn't annoy him, just left him wondering, and he hated wondering. He was alert, and looked toward the approaching creature. It sounded and had the scent of an adult male. This worried him. He glanced to Phantom, his responsibility. He chose responsibility for lack of a better word. There was word for her, but he couldn't quite find it. He smiled warily, then turned right in time to see the new dog approach.
Shurikan, already above this new male, stood, and stood tall. He wanted to send this dog the message that he was guarding Phantom, and that he'd better be polite. If he wasn't, he'd be in trouble. He saw the male walk and sit next to Phantom. He didn't want to be rude, but he didn't trust this male yet. They were too close to the dark packs. He huffed a bit before standing up and sitting on the other side of her, and giving her a concerned look, meant only for her eyes. He wanted quite badly to sit between them, but he didn't want to make this wolf, now being introduced as Luke Marius, to feel instantly un-trusted. He turned to Phantom as she spoke, and couldn't help but chuckle as she asked his name. "Phantom, My lady, I believe he has already given you his name. It is Luke Marius." he said with a small smile. His smile fading into a devoted and serious look, he turned to Luke. "My name is Shurikan." he introduced himself simply. He wanted to convey his message to Luke silently. That he was there for Phantom, and that he'd really appreciate it if he would sit over there/ his eyes widened. What was he thinking? He wasn't jealous, and Luke hadn't shown any signs of hostility...but still. He looked down, so he wouldn't say anything to Luke with his eyes.
While the massive dog stared at the ground, he wondered at his own...emotions. He wasn't too familiar with those. He missed Ceres, and he worried for Phantom. He was happy, he guessed, to be speaking with her. But what did he feel toward Luke, and what nagging feelings ran with his mind for Phantom? He glanced up at the two of them with a slight sigh. Soon enough he would know. He thought long on these sorts of things, and always figured them out at one point or another. Still, he was impatient for once. He wanted to know now. He shook these thoughts away, and decided that conversation would best relieve him. “Ah, so Luke, my brother, where have you come from? Have you a home?” he almost inquired of any sort of family, but that would have been greatly overstepping boundaries. He glanced to Phantom, now realizing that he wanted to ask her the same question. His eye lit for a brief moment, but he knew not exactly why. Something about her was special, this he knew.

(Oh. OK! MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE!) Feeling embarrassed at the fact she had not noticed this dog giving its name before, Phantom bent her head. "I am so sorry. I must have missed that, Luke." She truly was sorry. It was normal, though, for her to feel sorry toward others or ashamed of herself easily. It was simply her nature of being. She was feeling uncomfortable next to Luke. Not that he scared her or seemed suspicious or any of that sort. She just felt that way around certain dogs. She never truly knew why, and she might never ever truly know the reason for this. Sometimes it could come in handy, but she had not been around enough dogs to know if it could really be handy. To her, it was just a nuisance. Owls hooted in the background. The moon shone bright and dragonflies flitted across the water and flew through the air in their trapeze-like ways. Another fish splashed, but Phantom ignored it.

OOC; This might seem confusing. xD
Luke nodded at the female as she said her name. He didn't care much, but he tried not to let it show. "Nice to meet you." He murmured. Luke ignored the female's stupid question. He simply blinked at her, hoping she would see the anger in his gaze. Instead, she had decided to look up at the sky, a drifter. He hated people not listening to him, which he assumed was the case with her. He glanced at the male on the other side of Phantom. He snorted, and moved away from both of them. He sat where the male had just been sitting, gazing at them boredly. His clover wasn't helping him, like it usually did. Maybe it was just him, but they seemed too interested in each other to even pay attention to him. Suddenly, the male was talking. For a moment, all Luke saw was his muzzle moving, and then forming words as though his speech was in slow motion. His attention had been all over the place, but his eyes were focused on something in particular, the female's amber eyes. They were beautiful, and somehow familiar. His attention returned to the male, who seemed to be talking, but mute, and his eyes froze on him. An icy gaze was sent toward Shurikan, a gaze that would suspend the greatest of leaders over the verge of death. It was a weird feeling to be felt, he had felt it before himself. It was gone before it could be registered as a sign of hatred. He blinked, and the icy glare was gone as quickly as it had come. He nodded. "Pleasure to meet you Shurikan." He said, his voice a bit shaken.
It scared him how short his temper was. "I come from an unknown pack. It was very small. I left that about two years ago, being a loner since." He said quietly. It brought back memories of Saidako. He shook it off and glanced back up at them, a somewhat vulnerable look in his eyes. He figured he had said enough, and in the unwanted awkward silence he heard a howl. It was quiet, but strong. He was suddenly curious and he grinned. "It was a pleasure to meet you two, Shurikan and Phantom. I have heard the call of a close friend [lie] and I would love to meet up with him." His voice was quiet, and without waiting for an answer he nodded to Shurikan and seductively brushed past Phantom, on his way toward his enemy.

Shurikan glanced toward Phantom with a small smile. She was funny, how cute she was when she was embarrassed. He chuckled under his breath, but neither of them would hear him. He watched her gaze wander, thinking the opposite of Luke, He found it sweet, the mark of a dreamer. He wished he could be that way, but he always had to focus on something.
Shurikan heard Luke murmur about how it was nice to meet him. His face grew stiff and a huff came form his maw. Luke didn't mean it, and Shurikan didn't care. Shurikan watched contentedly as Luke moved away. That had been what he was hoping for, the temporarily selfish beast. Shurikan felt ashamed to be acting so silently hostile toward Luke. Shurikan noticed that while he was speaking, Luke was only looking into Phantom's eyes. His tail twitched angrily. Not only was Luke not caring about what Shurikan had to say, but now he was busy making twinkle eyes at his...at Phantom. Suddenly, a cold glare shot Shurikan. He almost stepped back, but he didn't. He sent Luke the same bitter stare. Usually he wasn't like this, but for some reason the beautiful fem next to him made him protective. Then, the male lied about how it was 'Pleasure to meet him.’ Shurikan nodded. "It is also a pleasure on my part, Luke..." he said, trailing off toward the end.
Shurikan listened to Luke's story when suddenly a howl shot through the air. With grin and some scattered words about an old friend, Luke took off. It didn't disappoint Shurikan much. He nodded respectfully to the running male, then turned to Phantom. He had caught the way Luke had gone past her, and his lips almost formed a snarl. "Phantom, are you alright? Did he scare you at all?" he asked protectively. If he had, Shurikan would be on his tail in seconds.

(suckish post. sorreh. ) After taking her head from the clouds, she listened as he returned the greeting with a "full heart". Phantom listened to Luke's story, but found it uninteresting. Aren't they all from some mysterious pack, going their own way and trying to survive? Phantom thought. Her mind seemed to trail off easily, but it was not until now that she had ever truly realized it. Suddenly a flash of anger shot through the gaze he gave her- boy was that a mistake. She struggled to keep her seat and keep her calm as he momentarily glared at her. How dare he do that! Does he not know the meaning of the word "manners" or "lady"?! Do those words not have any meaning for him! Why if I could just get a little closer I could- Her thoughts had been interrupted by a sudden snort from Luke. Shurikan had begun talking by that point, but she could vaguely make out the words. She looked over towards the huffing male and saw the cold, icy stare being thrown through the air. Her mind wandered off yet once more as she took in the situation at hand. The dog known as Luke passed by her, causing her fur to ruffle a little. After the dog had left, Shurikan spoke up and asked her a question with full heart and full intent- as if he was... worried for her sake. Calmly, she replied. "Oh, you saw him. Annoying as he was, I am not hurt nor afraid. Calm down!"

Shurikan's head lowered slightly at Phantom's comment. Why was he being so dramatic and protective? He was probably making her feel weak or something. He didn't know, and he hated that feeling. He hated not knowing what was going on, he just liked understanding all the time, but sometimes he couldn't, and right now he didn't even understand himself and that he definitely distained. He did calm down as she asked, his piercing golden eyes looked up at her. He nodded his head in sincere apology. "Phantom, My lady, I apologize...." he said, then looked away. Should he tell her that why he was acting this way? OR at least what he knew of why? He decided on yes, for both their sakes. He looked to her with a serious look. "Phantom, I'm being so protective like this because...because there is something very special about you, and...and even though I know that you can, are quite able," he said and sighed, stammering over his words. He was surprised at himself, he never had trouble speaking. "That you are perfectly capable of looking out for yourself, I guess I find myself unable to be still when even something so little might be making you uncomfortable..." he said, looking down, his words soft and hesitant, unlike his usual confidence.
He wished he could understand what he was feeling. He knew he was nervous, but also happy in a way. He enjoyed Phantom's company, but something about her brought attention to his faults. He was so weak around her, but for some reason he had a feeling that was only temporary.
